I. Core Structural Features

Drum-shaped tooth design: This is its most distinctive feature. The tooth tips and flanks of the external gear sleeve are machined into a spherical drum shape, meshing with the straight or slightly modified teeth of the internal gear ring. This design fundamentally distinguishes it from traditional straight-tooth couplings.

Basic-type structure: GICL is the "basic type." It typically consists of two shaft sleeves with drum-shaped external teeth and one internal gear ring with straight (or slightly modified) teeth, connected via bolts. The structure is relatively compact.

Clearance and lubrication: There is appropriate side clearance between the teeth. The interior is filled with lubricating grease (typically lithium-based grease or extreme pressure gear oil) to reduce wear and dissipate heat.

II. Exceptional Performance Characteristics

Allows for significant angular and radial displacement:

Angular compensation: Typically allows for 1° to 1.5° of angular misalignment. The drum-shaped tooth design enables the tooth contact point to shift smoothly with the misalignment, avoiding edge loading and stress concentration common in straight-tooth couplings.
Radial compensation: Allows for a certain degree of parallel offset (radial displacement).
Axial compensation: Due to the curved surface of the drum teeth, it can also absorb a small amount of axial float.
Comprehensive compensation capability: Can compensate for multi-directional displacements simultaneously, making it a typical flexible coupling.

High load capacity and torque transmission:

Multiple teeth engage simultaneously, resulting in a large contact area on the tooth surfaces and lower unit pressure. This enables the transmission of very high torque, making it suitable for heavy-duty applications.

High reliability and long service life:

The drum-shaped teeth avoid stress concentration, leading to even wear on the tooth flanks.
A good lubrication environment minimizes wear and corrosion.
With proper alignment and maintenance, it has a very long service life.

Suitability for high speeds:

Dynamic balancing can be performed effectively, making it suitable for medium to high-speed operating conditions.

Requires lubrication and maintenance:

This is a characteristic but can also be considered a drawback. It requires periodic replenishment of lubricating grease and inspection of the sealing condition, classifying it as a coupling requiring maintenance. The reliability of the seals (typically O-rings or lip seals) is crucial, as oil leakage will accelerate wear.

III. Application Characteristics

Typical application fields:

Heavy-duty metallurgical machinery (rolling mills, straightening machines)
Mining machinery (crushers, ball mills, conveyors)
Marine propulsion systems (connections between main engine and gearbox)
Large-scale pumps and fans
Power generation equipment (e.g., auxiliary equipment connections in turbine generator sets)
Other low-to-medium speed, heavy-duty drive systems with significant installation errors or operational displacements.
